David
Paul is
an accomplished violinist, pianist, composer, arranger and teacher. After completing a B.A. at St. Olaf College (Phi Beta Kappa) and a
M.M. in orchestral studies at Rice University (Full Graduate Fellowship),
Mr. Paul played first violin in the Jacksonville Florida Symphony for seven
years.
He was introduced to Tai'
Chi Gung with
Rasaji and began practicing faithfully.
Doing Tai' Chi Gung: Tai' (life) Chi (energy)
Gung (body) brings profound awareness, vitality and regeneration to
the different systems of the body, mind and spirit. Consistent
practice heightens creativity for any person in any discipline, but
especially for performing artists.
Mr. Paul's introduction to Tai' Chi Gung quickly
led to an interest in many diverse musical styles. He is called into
the recording studio by artists on a regular basis who are writing in
classical, folk, rock, jazz, blue grass and Celtic musical traditions.
His original work is profoundly soothing, and
his mastery of improvisation from many musical styles makes his solo
appearances incredibly satisfying.

Tai' Chi Gung and Music |
|
A Seminar with David Paul
Learn to apply the principles of
Tai’ Chi Gung, a 3000 year old
Tibetan system of energy, health and regeneration to music.
Mr. Paul began studying
Tai' Chi Gung with
Rasaji over 22 years ago when he was a
first violinist with the Jacksonville Symphony. Rasaji lived and
trained at the original school of Tai' Chi Gung in Tibet under Bo-Yang,
the current world authority. The Tai' Chi Gung system Rasaji
shares is from the original teacher. It comes to us in a 3000 year
unbroken lineage shared from teacher to student.
In the seminar with David
Paul, you will learn the same system of Tai' Chi Gung he is practicing,
and how to apply these concepts and principles to music.

Reach your full potential as an artist |
|
|
Many musicians learn to
play the notes, but how can they consciously develop a creative,
dynamic, powerful artistic voice? The masters of Tai’ Chi Gung
understood how to draw energy, store it, transform it, sustain it and
release it. These ancient principles can help musicians at any
technical level develop and mature their ’artistic voice’ by becoming
conscious of the life force in the music itself.
|
|
Be
a more dynamic performer |
|
|
When professional
musicians go on stage, they know how to ‘turn it on’ whether they feel
like it or not. Some musicians have great stage presence, others
develop it. Understood properly, the simple exercises of Tai’ Chi Gung
can speed this development dramatically by giving musicians a conscious
knowledge of the energy they are dealing with when they play. It can
give them a reservoir of energy to draw from so their well is deep,
and it does not run dry on stage.
|
|
Develop better ensemble skills |
|
|
The ‘6th sense’ that allows good ensemble players to
follow each other is one of the most obvious signs that musicians
understand the energy of Tai’ Chi Gung. Knowledge and practice of
these principles speed its development and can magnify the ensemble
awareness 10 fold in minutes.
|
|
Deepen your appreciation for your art |
|
|
Every music lover has pieces or artists that touch their soul deeply
when they listen. Some can even re-experience this ‘chill’ up the
spine by recalling a performance from the past. Imagine how powerful
it would be to find a discipline of health and regeneration that
increases the frequency and intensity of these ‘artistic’ moments?
Imagine playing with a group of musicians who understood how to
recreate these moments consciously at will?
|
|
Strengthen your technique |
|
|
The
physical mechanics of playing or singing depend on proper coordination
of mind, body and spirit. The ‘effortless’ playing of a prodigy
follows the laws of motion and energy of Tai’ Chi Gung. A prodigy is
a Tai’ Chi Gung master. The exercises will give a musician a working
understanding of that state, sometimes called the ‘zone’, and a step
by step process for integrating it into their everyday playing and
performing.
|
|
Enhance your creativity |
|
|
As
much as music is considered an art, not all music practice or study
develops the right brain. Tai’ Chi Gung is designed to bring left and
right brain into balance. It will teach a musician how to focus, it
will enhance their mental clarity, and, it will allow them to release
deeper and more intense performances, Tai’ Chi Gung can give musicians
the command of their performance so they have inspired performance
that are clear, focused and grounded.
|
|
Overcome stage fright |
|
|
Having stage fright is not wrong, but it can feel like being on the
inside a champagne bottle that someone just started to shake up. It
can be as if you are about to explode or worse, die right then and
there. The
principles of Tai’ Chi Gung can be integrated into music training
easily so that musicians learn how to release this pressure, focus
their mind effectively, and channel nervous and self conscious energy into a great
performance.
|
|
Play without injury |
|
|
One
of the most significant benefits of doing Tai’ Chi Gung is that
musicians can learn to play so they do not injure their bodies. An
injury can end a career and render all the years of preparation
useless. The Tai’ Chi Gung system Mr. Paul shares goes back in an
unbroken lineage for more than 3000 years. The Tai’ Chi Gung masters
know how to teach body mechanics. Tai' Chi Gung is sometimes
called the user manual for the human body. The simple exercises can be applied
to any instrument or the voice.
